Applied Micro to sample 16nm finfet 64-bit Arm server chip next year
Applied Micro will sample the first 16nm finfet 64-bit Arm-based server chips in H2 2016.
By David Manners-Electronics Weekly, Nov. 17, 2015 –
Called X-Gene 3, the chip will have 32 cores, described by Applied Micro as "brawny", which run at up to 3GHz delivering 4x to 6x the performance of X-Gene 2.
"We are finally ready to take the lid off something we have been working on for the last two years in stealth mode," says Applied Micro's CEO, Paramesh Gopi.
"The proof is in my hand (an X-Gene 3 test chip)," adds Gopi, "we are really excited because X-Gene 3 gives us the opportunity to inflect the entire (Arm server) market
The chip has eight DDR4-2667 memory channels and 42 PCIe Gen 3 lanes. It will be able to address tough workloads like data mining, real time and predictive analytics, and deep learning.
Arm is predicting that its architecture will be in 25% of server slots by 2020.
