ST falls in image sensor vendor ranking, Sony up

In 2015 the top three image sensor vendors remained the same but with changes amongst the lesser vendors, according to a ranking provided by Yole Developpement.

By Peter Clarke, EETimes, Jun. 29, 2016 –

Sony has retained its lead of the market and increased its market share to 35 percent, from 27 percent the year before. Sony has retained 19 percent market share while third placed OmniVision has continued to lose market share dropping down to 12 percent.

OmniVision was in the process of being acquired by a Chinese consortium through the second-half of 2015. The deal closed in January 2016 but the prospect of Chinese ownership and uncertainty may have impacted sales (see Omnivision moves sensor supply to China, says Yole ). Nonetheless the top three vendors now command 66 percent of the market.

However, one of the biggest losers in the ranking was STMicroelectronics, which suffered a 23 percent fall in sales and fell from 7th ranked vendor in 2014 to 10th ranked in 2016. Nikon and SiliconFile both dropped out of the ranking all together while SK Hynix and Panasonic both burst into the ranking with annual sales growths of 63 and 38 percent respectively.
