Delphi joins autonomous driving project of BMW, Intel and Mobileye

The trio becomes a quartet. BMW, Intel and Mobileye have announced that tier one Delphi will join them in the project of developing a platform for autonomous driving. At this opportunity, the original group provided details of their joint project. The surprise lies in its business model.

May. 16, 2017 –

The four partners together pursue the target of establishing a cooperation model that will provide scalable solutions for the entire automotive industry and potentially further industries. This is a new insight: Though BMW is one of the initiators of the development project, the trio intends to market it to third parties, including BMW competitors.

The move follows the original trio's announcement to bundle expertise and resources to devise an autonomous driving platform for their customers. They plan to start series production of vehicles equipped accordingly by 2021. In the meantime, the partners have already developed a basic scalable architecture that can be adapted by other vehicle developers. The platform will offer enough design freedom for third parties to differentiate their respective brands from the BMW platform.

Delphi already developed a prototype of this computing platform. In addition, the company partnered with Mobileye in creating a similar platform before Mobileye was acquired by Intel. What's more, the supplier has worked with Intel and Mobileye in the areas of high-performance computing and sensor fusion.
