Smaller chips, bigger opportunities: Where GlobalFoundries is going next

Tom Caulfield and his team of 3,300 employees are determined to start producing their next generation of smaller, more powerful computer chips in Malta, New York, before the end of this year.

The senior vice president and general manager of GlobalFoundries' manufacturing complex in Saratoga County announced 18 months ago that the company would invest billions of dollars to move from 14 nanometer to 7 nanometer technology. Doing so would improve performance and reduce power demands as GlobalFoundries competes against a shrinking number of companies making the world's most advanced chips.

"A decade ago there were about a dozen companies doing leading edge manufacturing," Caulfield said.
