Intel selects SiTime for 5G timing MEMS

Jul. 31, 2018 –

SiTime is a pioneer of MEMS resonator devices as replacements for quartz timing devices and has been owned by Megachips Corp. (Osaka, Japan) since 2014. SiTime's products have been used in a variety of applications including consumer electronics, networking and telecom infrastructure, healthcare, and industrial and automotive applications. They have the ability to withstand temperature variation, vibration and shock that is superior to that of quartz crystal based devices, SiTime claims.

"Intel's modem technology and SiTime's MEMS timing solutions will help customers for our 5G modems gain high levels of reliability and to truly take advantage of the performance and capacity that 5G will bring," said Cormac Conroy, corporate vice president and general manager of the communication and devices group at Intel, in a statement issued by SiTime.

SiTime is working on timing circuits for Intel's 5G multi-mode radio modems, with additional applicability to Intel LTE, millimeter-wave wireless, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GNSS solutions. Intel 5G platforms are due to become available in 2019.
