View from Brussels: EU refuses to play 5G blame game

An EU report into 5G security risks has failed to name explicitly which countries or companies pose the biggest threat to the future roll-out of the technology, as Brussels tried to play a canny diplomatic game. But not everybody got the memo.

eandt.theiet.org, Oct. 16, 2019 –

5G is on the way and fast. EU officials regularly refer to it as "the digital plumbing for our society", citing its predicted impact on everything from healthcare and energy to transport and banking.

To prepare for its arrival, the European Commission and the 28 countries that call the bloc home worked on an in-depth report on the potential pitfalls of the technology, from both a cyber security and global competitiveness standpoint.

Their work concluded that the vast bounty of opportunities afforded by 5G comes hand-in-hand with an increased risk of cyber attacks, a dependence on one supplier and threats to network integrity.

At least the Commission did not try to gloss over those findings. The UK's Commissioner, Julian King, told journalists: "It is a technological step change. Inevitably, it will increase exposure to vulnerabilities like software updates and patching arrangements."

King, who is not speculating on whether he would continue as Commissioner if the UK is granted a Brexit extension, called the report a "thorough piece of work and excellent basis to analyse all together, to manage and mitigate risks".

Despite well-publicised concerns about China's role in providing 5G networks to other countries, though, neither it nor its market juggernaut Huawei are mentioned by name in the report.
