Samsung Elec to fully employ 5-nano process to make own phones and others

Samsung Electronics Co. will employ 5-nanometer process to make modem chips for own premium phones and for contract clients from next year for a new traction in revenue from mobile chips. It would be the industry's first to run mobile chip fabrication on 5-nano node in high volume.

According to multiple sources from the semiconductor industry on Tuesday, Samsung Electronics is expected to commence mass-production of its 5-nano mobile application processor (AP) chips starting next year after improving production yields.

Nano refers to the width of chip circuit line, and the thinner the circuit width, the higher the chip performance and energy efficiency.

Currently, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world's top foundry player, and Samsung Electronics are the only chipmakers with stable 5-nano processing technology.

Samsung Electronics aims to win over more clients through 5-nano system-on-a chip next year. Its chip combines an AP and modem chip with thinner circuit width that not only allows slimmer mobile device designs but also reduces both costs and heat.

According to industry tracker Counterpoint Research, Samsung Electronics accounted for 13 percent of the world's mobile AP market as of June, following Qualcomm with 29 percent, MediaTek with 26 percent, and HiSilicon with 16 percent, and Apple with 13 percent.

Samsung Electronics' Exynos 2100, the mobile AP for its flagship Galaxy S21 smartphone scheduled for release next year, will be mass produced using the 5-nanometer system-on-a chip. It will also seek to supply its APs to Chinese smartphone makers.

Last year, Samsung Electronics began to supply Exynos chips to China's Vivo. It will unveil the 5-nanometer Exynos 1080 on Nov. 12 in China that is expected to be supplied to Chinese smartphone makers Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo.
