TSMC to Make 3 nm Semiconductors at Arizona Fab, Looking to 1 nm

To meet worldwide demands, the largest semiconductor manufacturers are ramping up capacity. Among them, TSMC reportedly has plans to build 3 nm chips at its Arizona fab.

allaboutcircuits.com, Nov. 29, 2022 –

As a global chip shortage, worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic, threatens manufacturing, industry giants are focussing their efforts on the most advanced chips for next-generation products.

The Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has plans to scale down its process node technology even further. TSMC will reportedly manufacture 3 nm chips at its Arizona chip fab and potentially has plans for 1 nm chip production too.

Status of Node Scaling in the Industry

In semiconductor manufacturing, the 3 nm process is the next die shrink after the 5 nm technology node and one several big industry players are vying to achieve first. Smaller nodes allow more transistors to be placed on a given area, boosting power efficiency.

The first-generation 3 nm chips will be able to reduce power consumption by almost half while vastly improving performance.
