European Semiconductor Sales Fell by 6% in 2020

The European semiconductor market has experienced negative growth for another year, according to the latest figures from the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA).

In 2020, Europe's semiconductor market weakened further, unlike most markets in the rest of the world. The European semiconductor sales indeed increased by 12.1% in 2018, but declined by 7.3% in 2019, and by 6% in 2020.

World dynamics

Following record sales in 2018, the worldwide semiconductor market decreased in 2019, due largely to cyclicality in the memory market. In 2020, the global semiconductor sales returned to growth and amounted to $439 billion, up 6.5% year-on-year. For the month of December 2020, sales reached $39.2 billion, an increase of 8.3% compared to the December 2019 total and 2% less than the November 2020 total. Fourth-quarter sales reached $117.5 billion, up 8.3% year-on-year and up 3.5% sequentially.
