Intel Set to Chase Samsung Electronics in Foundry Business

Intel and Qualcomm are expected to strengthen their cooperation in the foundry sector.

Competition in the global foundry market is expected to heat up as Qualcomm, a big global foundry client, suggests the possibility of starting business cooperation with Intel, which has re-entered the foundry business.

Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon recently expressed his full support for the EU plans to attract foundries, including Intel's plan to invest up to 80 billion euros (US$95 billion) over the next decade in two major European chip plants.

"In the event that that happens with the leading process technology, Qualcomm is definitely going to be interested in utilizing those foundries," Amon said at the IAA Mobility 2021 in Munich, Germany, on Sept. 8 (local time).

In June, Amon said at the Evolve Conference hosted by Intel that Intel's investment in the foundry business would help Qualcomm's future business, as Qualcomm produces chips overseas. "I'm very happy that the U.S. semiconductor industry will be able to build a much more flexible supply chain with on-shoring."
