5GCroCo Project Advances Cross-border Connectivity for Cars

www.eetimes.eu, Oct. 27, 2021 –

A European research consortium created over three years ago is about to start trialing technologies targeting seamless 5G connectivity even when driving from one country on the continent to the other.

The 5GCroCo –short for Fifth Generation Cross-Border Control– has been handsomely aided by the European Commission in a project that has a total budget €17 million. Focused on connectivity for autonomous and connected vehicles, it recently demonstrated driving between the cities of Metz, in France, Merzig, in Germany, and Luxembourg.

Companies involved include car manufacturers such as Volvo, Renault, and Volkswagen, mobile operators such as Orange and Deutsche Telekom, major infrastructure and systems suppliers such as Nokia, Ericsson, Bosch, Huawei, and NextWorks, and research establishments such as Eurecom (France), HTW Saar (Germany), and the Technical University of Munich (Germany). The project is coordinated by the Centre Tecnologic de Telecomunicacions de Catalunya in Castelldefels, near Barcelona (Spain).

Altogether there are 24 participants across seven European countries, all under the umbrella of the 5G Public Private Partnership. The EC provided €13 million of the project's budget.

The key initial target has been to develop, demonstrate and validate 5G features such as 5G NR, MEC-enabled distributed computing, network slicing and improved and advanced positioning systems, all combined together, and thus enable innovative use cases for connected, cooperative and automated mobility (CCAM) services.

The plan then is to define new business models that can be built on top of this connectivity and service provisioning capacity. This, then, it is hoped, would feed into the relevant standardization bodies from the two involved industries.

The three specific use cases targeted are: Tele-operated driving (ToD); HD Mapping and Anticipated Co-operative Collision Avoidance (ACCA).
