France to Invest €2.2b in AI by 2025

The French government has presented the second phase of a strategic plan to make France a “champion of artificial intelligence” on the international scene. The €2.2 billion investment will be particularly focused on talent development initiatives. 

In March 2018, French President Emmanuel Macron set the ambition to make France a world leader in AI and launched an initial €1.5 billion plan aimed at supporting and fostering the country's scientific and technological potential. 

On November 8th, 2021, Frédérique Vidal, French Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, and Cédric O, French Secretary of State for Digital Transition and Electronic Communications, unveiled the second phase of this strategy at the “France is AI” event, organized by France Digitale. This second phase is part of the France 2030 framework, and aims to tackle the talent challenge in artificial intelligence. 

"When we talk about innovation that goes as fast as artificial intelligence, we need to think about an acceleration plan from very basic research that will enable innovation in two, three, five, ten years, to the creation of startups," said Vidal in her keynote speech at the 'France is AI' event on Monday.
