5 Trends Shaping the Automotive Perception Market

When the sky is blue and birds are singing, autonomous vehicles can almost drive themselves. It is a different story in bad weather, such as rain, fog, ice, snow, and dust. Robust perception is crucial to ensure safe roads and protect drivers and other vulnerable road users.
Camera, radar, and LiDAR units are the "eyes" of the vehicles. They provide environmental awareness and map the road to full autonomy.
Vision remains by far the most pervasive sensing mechanism in automotive, said Rudy Burger, founder and managing partner at Woodside Capital Partners, in his presentation at this year's AutoSens Brussels. Woodside Capital tracks, year after year, nearly 180 companies in the automotive perception arena. 2021, the peak in LiDAR investments
If perception is considered today as the key enabling technology that will put autonomous vehicles on the road, it was almost nonexistent 10 years ago. Cameras and radars represented "almost nothing five-six years ago, now we are looking at millions of units" and "funding amounts going into companies are measured in millions."
