The Jülich Supercomputing Center (JSC) and D-Wave Systems launched the company's first cloud-based quantum service in Europe.

A quantum computer with over 5,000 qubits based on the principle of quantum annealing has been put into operation at Germany's Forschungszentrum Jülich, one of the largest interdisciplinary research centers in Europe. This is the first system of its kind outside North America. It was created by the Jülich Supercomputing Center (JSC) and D-Wave Systems. The new system, which has been installed in Jülich and will work closely with the JSC supercomputers, will be available to researchers across Europe.

During the ceremony, Federal Minister of Education and Research Bettina Stark-Watzinger, Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) Hendrik Wüst, and European Commissioner Mariya Gabriel officially commissioned the system, where they emphasized the importance of collaboration in the development of practical quantum applications across industries and research fields.

In Germany and across Europe, Forschungszentrum Jülich has set the objective of building a leading development and user community for quantum computing applications from industry and science. To achieve this purpose, JUNIQ (Jülich UNified Infrastructure for Quantum computing) was launched as a user facility for open innovations at the Jülich Supercomputing Center in 2019. It gives customers access to a standardized quantum computing platform as a service, allowing them to accelerate computational resources to quickly address specific research needs. The new quantum system is the second D-Wave quantum computer within the JUNIQ user infrastructure and the world's first Advantage system located outside the company's headquarters in Canada.
