France Invests Over €5B in Semiconductors

France's Electronique 2030 investment plan aims to support semiconductor manufacturing, research, and training.

France sees semiconductors as a strategic priority and has unveiled a €5 billion investment plan to develop and produce cutting-edge electronics technology by 2030.

During a visit today (July 12) to STMicroelectronics' manufacturing site in Crolles, French President Emmanuel Macron presented the ambitions and actions of the "Electronique 2030" investment plan.

"Electronique 2030" is an integral part of "France 2030," an investment plan launched in October 2021 to revive France's industrial economy and to create future technological champions in strategic sectors such as semiconductors, robotics, electric vehicles, nuclear, and renewable energy sources.

The plan includes three key targets:

• Increase semiconductor manufacturing capacity.
• Support innovation and exploratory research.
• Support education and training in electronics to meet future skills needs.

Increase manufacturing capacity

French and European needs for components are expected to double by 2030, driven not only by the digital transition but also by the environmental and energy transition. The European Chips Act, announced in February by the European Commission, is set to mobilize €43 billion in public and private funding for the semiconductor industry, with the ambition to double the EU's current share of global chip production to 20% in 2030.

"The European Chips Act demonstrates the European Union's willingness to take action and regain our sovereignty in the field of semiconductors," said Thierry Breton, European commissioner for the Internal Market. "In about 30 years, we have gone from 40% of the global manufacturing capacity to less than 10%. Today, this dependence is no longer acceptable, as it impacts the entire value chain."

With "Electronique 2030," France is now adopting the EU's dynamic and will double its semiconductor manufacturing capacity, said Breton.
