Scaling Up Quantum Computing by Interconnecting Quantum Processors

French startup Welinq has raised €5 million to deliver industry-grade neutral-atom quantum memories for deployment in quantum computing and quantum communication infrastructures

Paris-based Welinq is working to interconnect quantum processors so as to increase their computational capabilities. The one-year–old startup announced it has secured €5 million in a pre-seed round of financing to deliver industry-grade neutral-atom quantum memories for deployment in quantum computing and quantum communication infrastructures.

Quantum memories are considered the key missing hardware for quantum computing and quantum communication applications. Welinq has developed quantum memories needed to synchronize the signals from different processors to make them work in parallel. By using a laser-cooled neutral-atom technology, the startup said it has demonstrated storage-and-retrieval efficiency of up to 90% – a parameter indicating the amount of information retained throughout the process without being lost along the way.

Welinq claims its cold-atom technology is reliable and mature for rapid deployment in HPC centers and quantum communication infrastructures.

Welinq is now working on its first high-performance quantum memory product that is "integrated, transportable and deployable" in quantum computing centers, with the goal of achieving the first proofs of concept for processor interconnects at quantum computing providers.

The technologies developed by Welinq stem from two French quantum technology laboratories: the Laboratoire Kastler Brossel, specializing in fundamental physics of quantum systems, and the Laboratoire d'Informatique de la Sorbonne Université.
