Leti Innovation Days: From Lab to Fab and the Future of Semiconductors

"A new page in microelectronics may well be written in the years to come," CEA-Leti CEO Sébastien Dauvé told EE Times Europe.

The electronics industry is at an inflection point, and all players in the value chain need to work together on new trajectories for energy-efficient computing. The Leti Innovation Days, to be held from June 27 to 29, will discuss "Transformational Technologies for Your Products and Our Future".

"A turning point is underway," CEA-Leti CEO Sébastien Dauvé told EE Times Europe. "Just four years ago, semiconductors were considered a mere commodity. The semiconductor industry is now highly political, and what we're seeing between China and the United States may well reshape the ultra-optimized world we've had until now. Semiconductor value chains, which have become internationalized, are in the process of being recomposed with the massive investments we're seeing."

The EU Chips Act, the U.S. CHIPS Act and other similar efforts in global geographies aim to unleash innovation and accelerate the translation from research (lab) to the design and manufacture (fab) of semiconductor products.

The recent passing of Gordon Moore, co-founder of Intel and creator of Moore's law, came at a pivotal time in the history of microelectronics. "Gordon Moore defined a law of evolution to microelectronics, which has not been denied for over 60 years now," Dauvé said. "Even if efforts are maintained to pursue Moore's law, no one can ignore the physical limitations and increasing costs. "A new page in microelectronics may well be written in the years to come," Dauvé said. "We can see that More than Moore, which traditionally complements More Moore, is gaining in importance, as embedded systems don't necessarily need the most advanced nodes."

The More Moore concept is about cutting-edge electronics and the production of ever-smaller, higher-performance transistors for supercomputers (CPUs and GPUs), to make them more powerful and energy-efficient. The More than Moore concept refers to technologies involving imagers, sensors, LEDs, high frequency for 5G telecoms, or power electronics on less advanced nodes. CEA-Leti has adopted a More than Moore stance for over 20 years, much like other European microelectronics groups such as STMicroelectronics, NXP and Infineon.
