Singapore opens US$2bn chiplet factory
Silicon Box, a startup created by the founders of chip company Marvell and an experienced chip packaging executive, has opened a US$2 billion factory in Singapore to address chiplet design and assembly.

The facility will help customers design chiplets and then assemble and package them within its factory using "sub-5nm" technology on rectangular, large-area interposers.
The company claims the use of its chiplet interposer technology can improve circuit performance by more than 50 percent and lower power consumption by more than 40 percent.
Silicon Box Pte. Ltd. (Singapore) was founded in 2021 by the founders of Marvell, Sehat Sutardja and Weili Dai, and Byung Joon (BJ) Han, who serves the company as CEO. BJ Han previously spent 20 years of his career with STATS ChipPAC which was acquired by Jiangsu Changjiang Electronics Technology Co. Ltd. (JCET) in 2015. He served variously as CTO, CEO and chairman.
Silicon Box's creation of the packaging facility, occupying 73,000 square meters, has been done with the support of the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) and will create more than 1,000 jobs. The amount of financial support given for the factory in the Tampines district of Singapore has not been given.
"This new facility is well poised to solve the unique challenges for chiplet adoption, which is critical to meet market demands of emerging technologies. Our proprietary interconnection technology will not only shorten the design cycle of chips but also lower new device costs, reduce power consumption and enable faster time-to-market for industry partners like artificial intelligence, data centres, and electronic vehicles," said Han, in a statement.
