The Internet of Things (IoT) really began to get traction as an application space with the arrival of ubiquitous connectivity. Whether it was Wi-Fi, cellular, Bluetooth, LoRaWan, or other communications protocols, the ability for devices in the field to gather and transmit data to each other and to the cloud to the be analyzed was game-changing.

But it came with some limitations. The cost and energy required to send edge data into the cloud can be significant. Latency is an issue as well, particularly for applications, such as safety systems, that need to be as near real-time as possible. In other words, connectivity took IoT to the next level, but decision-making in that first wave of innovation was centralized and sometimes slow. Security too could be an issue. The more personal data captured in handheld devices, consumers became reluctant to have their fingerprints, retina scans, voice and so on shared in the cloud.

A recent survey found other concerns: The top challenge, cited by 60% of respondents, is the lengthy and complex software and product development cycles. This is followed by porting software to newer and more performant hardware, which was identified as challenging by 55% of developers. Achieving the right level of performance is also a major concern, with 52% of respondents highlighting this as a challenge.

But innovators were quick to identify these challenges, and they've acted quickly and collectively in recent years. What we see today is a flourishing of IoT innovation on three main sensor axes – voice, vision, and vibration – thanks to the embrace of artificial intelligence (AI) at the edge.
