SEMI's president Ajit Manocha said the 94 fabs coming online between 2022-2026 won't be enough to reach the industry's vision of becoming a trillion-dollar industry by 2030.

The mood at this week's SEMICON Europa in Munich was expectedly upbeat, but I would say cautiously so–driven by the exploding global demand for semiconductors due to the AI boom but concerned about capacity and talent.

Opening the CEO Summit of SEMICON Europa, co-located with Productronica, on Tuesday here at Messe München in Munich, SEMI president and CEO Ajit Manocha said, "The fundamentals of the industry are really strong. The potential of AI fueling our industry growth is huge. AI will be a game-changer for at least the next decade."

Manocha noted the 94 fabs coming online between 2022 and 2026 but indicated that even with all these fabs, it won't be enough to reach the industry's vision of becoming a trillion-dollar industry by 2030.

A key message was that with all the chips acts around the world, no single company or country can address the needs of the local ecosystems alone–and there was a strong need to collaborate across borders and each play to their strengths.

Other key issues raised by Manocha are ones we've heard many times before: the challenge (or war, as he called it) for talent, the need for a redesign of the supply chain–noting that "just in time" is not relevant anymore–and geopolitical tensions.

"We need global solutions for global challenges," he added.
