Intel Foundry Announces 18A Design Win for 64-Core Arm SoC

It's a feather in the cap for the company's nascent foundry services, especially given the node involved.

www.extremetech.com/, Feb. 06, 2024 –

Intel is reportedly hard at work on its next-generation semiconductor nodes, dubbed Intel 20A and 18A. The first of those is expected to arrive this year with Arrow Lake, with 18A arriving sometime in 2025 or so. Now, the company's foundry services entity has announced it's signed a deal to make a 64-core Arm SoC on its 1.8nm process, marking a major design win. It also shows Intel's willingness to make non-x86 chips for third parties, which is critical in its battle with TSMC for market dominance. Last year, it also announced a deal with Arm to develop Intel 18A SoCs.

Taiwanese design company Faraday announced the deal on its website, meaning Intel has poached a client from TSMC's backyard. The partnership calls for Intel to manufacture Arm Neoverse SoCs for the company, which it will sell to its clients across various industries. Faraday says it will offer the new chips to clients for applications including data centers, high-performance computing (HPC) ASICs, and custom SoCs. The announcement says this 64-core Arm Neoverse chip's performance and efficiency will make it the optimal choice for "scalable hyperscale data centers, infrastructure edge, and advanced 5G networks."
