Fraunhofer IIS Director Albert Heuberger Defines Germany's Semiconductor Industry
Three important developments will define the future of microelectronics: heterogeneous integration, the use of new materials and design approaches that take a more holistic view of systems.

To find out how applied research is helping boost Germany's semiconductor industry into the future, EE Times Europe spoke with Albert Heuberger, executive director of Fraunhofer IIS and chairman of The Research Fab Microelectronics Germany (FMD).
Heuberger compared the structures for innovation in Europe with those in North America and China, highlighting the unique role of research technology organizations in Europe, and discussed the evolution of technology and the challenges of predicting future developments. He emphasized the importance of stimulating the entrepreneurial spirit in Europe and Germany and identified the challenges of maintaining international cooperation and supply chains in the microelectronics industry. To counter this threat, stakeholders are working to ensure that mechanisms of cooperation between players in the ecosystem, particularly supply chains, hold up to prevent severe interruptions in the future.
Heuberger also talked about how important it is for academic institutions to help maintain the supply of new talent in the field of microelectronics and how FMD works to provide low threshold access to microelectronic products for smaller companies and startups. Government funding also plays an important role that includes funding incubators and accelerators in the microelectronics business.
