How Semiconductor Companies Can Help Drive Net Zero by 2050

This article will look at some of the work being done and highlight other ways that semiconductor companies can help drive net zero by 2050.

When the International Energy Agency released its roadmap of how the world's energy sector can slash its planet-heating emissions to net zero by 2050, it called upon corporations to help achieve this goal and limit global warming. One industry in particular that stands to make tremendous contributions to this effort is the semiconductor market. While many semiconductor companies already have programs underway, with significant results being achieved, many others are still looking at or starting to implement their own initiatives. This article will look at some of the work being done and highlight other ways that semiconductor companies can help drive net zero by 2050.

Large companies can help smaller suppliers meet energy goals

Taiwan's Industrial Development Bureau (IDB) has a program titled "Large companies leading smaller businesses in the supply chain for low carbon and smart transformation project." This initiative encourages major manufacturers to help smaller enterprises drive their own net-zero goals through subsidies from both the IDB and the Institute for Information Industry. For example, as a result of this program, a semiconductor company in Taiwan partnered with 13 of its suppliers to drive green energy improvements as part of a three-part work plan. This included a reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from factory processes, factory energy and water conservation measures, and the promotion of supply chain GHG inventory and hotspot analysis. This low-carbon project, which is planned to last two years, is designed to lead to a gradual increase in their carbon-reduction efforts. In fact, it is anticipated that by 2025, approximately 5,600 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) may be reduced every year. These efforts are equivalent to CO2 absorption of ~6,800 cubic meters of trees or 42,957,132 kilometers of driving. This is the impact that just one semiconductor company can have.
