As the consumer electronics sector gradually recovers from the chip shortage, and as demand for devices continues to rise, the global market is poised for significant growth. It is estimated that global revenue in the market will reach a staggering $1.2 trillion by 2028. However, it faces persistent challenges, including complex supply chains, intense competition, shortened product lifecycles and the constant iteration of new products.

Sustainability must become a top priority for survival, to meet regulations and to meet the shift in consumer attitude that's reflected in Apple's entertaining but poignant Mother Nature video. Consumers are increasingly prioritizing sustainable products despite their often-higher price tags. This demands a more holistic approach to product design and manufacturing that goes beyond immediate gains and addresses the long-term impact of the product and its constituent materials.

To truly accelerate this shift, government policies and enforcement will be necessary. Several countries have already taken steps in this direction: France now mandates that manufacturers and importers include labels containing recyclability and end-of-life sorting information for electrical appliances and batteries.

Collaboration drives sustainability

While smart manufacturing originally focused within factory walls, broader and more complex organizational and tech hurdles must be addressed if the industry is to meet its environmental goals. The practice of simply tossing ideas "over the wall" to manufacturing is no longer a sustainable business process. Instead, R&D, product development and manufacturing teams must collaborate to harness their collective strengths for more informed decision-making.
