Chip production TSMC and United Microelectronics shut down after earthquake

TSMC and United Microelectronics have halted chip production in some plants and evacuated employees due to the earthquake in Taiwan. This may particularly affect the production of high-end processors.

The recent earthquake on Taiwan's coast was the most powerful on the island in the past 25 years. TSMC and United Microelectronics have halted production and evacuated buildings at some sites in northern Taiwan, although they have not yet made any official announcements about the situation. Currently, both companies are assessing damage from the earthquake.

Impact on high-end processors

According to Bloomberg, the shutdown of chip production could have particularly severe consequences for high-end processors, which must remain in a vacuum for weeks before they can be further processed and eventually shipped.

The halted production and possibly a power outage may have affected the quality of these specific processors during manufacturing.

Taiwan is a risky location

Other analysts point to the risk still posed by the location of much of the world's chip production, close to two tectonic plates. The threat from the People's Republic of China also remains, which sees Taiwan as a renegade province to be reunited with the mother country.
