European Commission Funds €3 Million ($3.1 Million USD) Quantum Chip Project to Address Scalability Challenges

The European Commission has invested €3 million ($3.1 million USD) in the ONCHIPS project, a groundbreaking initiative to develop the first quantum chip combining electronics and light using advanced Germanium-Silicon (GeSi) technology. Led by the ONCHIPS consortium, which includes leading institutions such as the University of Twente, TU Eindhoven, and CNRS, the project aims to overcome scalability challenges in quantum computing by integrating spin qubits with photonic communication on a single CMOS-compatible platform.

The hexagonal GeSi material, discovered in 2020 for its light-emitting properties, enables efficient quantum information processing and transmission. While scientists have worked with cubic GeSi for years and even built qubits using it, this hexagonal variant offers unique advantages for quantum applications. This monolithic integration approach reduces system complexity and paves the way for mass production, positioning Europe as a leader in scalable quantum systems. The project, part of the Quantum Flagship program, seeks to strengthen Europe's quantum independence and reduce reliance on imported advanced chips.

The ONCHIPS initiative is set to conclude in 2026, with the goal of delivering a scalable quantum architecture that bridges the gap between quantum processing and long-distance communication. This advancement could enable practical applications in fields such as drug discovery, optimization, and cybersecurity, while strengthening Europe's role in the global quantum technology landscape.
