U.K. Commits £670M to Accelerate Quantum Computing Development

Jun. 25, 2025 –

The U.K. government has allocated £670 million (~€785 million) to fast-track quantum computing as part of a broader £1 billion technology investment package. The funding, announced by Science and Technology Secretary Peter Kyle, includes a 10-year settlement for the National Quantum Computing Centre. The initiative aims to develop quantum computers that outperform classical supercomputers by 2035, enabling advances in drug discovery, carbon capture, and secure communications. Quantum computing alone is estimated to contribute £2.3 billion (~€2.7 billion) to the U.K.’s GDP and support 26,900 jobs by 2034, rising to £11 billion (~€12.8 billion) and 126,100 jobs by 2045. The U.K. will launch an ambitious long-term quantum program to consolidate U.K. leadership, support commercialization and scale-up, build skills, enable access to key infrastructure, and unlock private investment.
