Samsung Electronics' foundry division has officially announced its entry into the silicon photonics market.

Silicon photonics is a technology that enables data transmission using light by integrating optical components onto semiconductor chips. It has gained attention as artificial intelligence (AI) data centers expand, highlighting bottlenecks in data transfer and rising power consumption.

While currently used to connect racks, switches and other components within data centers, the technology is expected to evolve to replace copper interconnects with optical links for chip-to-chip communication.
