18 New AI Startups in France in 2020 vs. 120 in 2019

www.eetimes.eu, Nov. 18, 2020 –

France has an active environment for artificial intelligence (AI), but the current crisis context has led to a sharp deceleration in startup creations. At this week's France Is AI Conference, France Digitale presented the 2020 mapping of AI startups in France: only 18 startups have emerged over the past eleven months, bringing the number of AI startups from 435 in 2019 to 453 in 2020.

453 AI startups

France's efforts in AI, initially marked by a lack of strategic focus, have gained momentum and made strong progress in recent years. In 2019, France Digitale identified 432 AI-related startups in France, up from 312 in 2018 and 180 in 2016. France then ranked first in AI capital investments in Europe, ahead of the United Kingdom and Germany. And ahead of Israel. "It was the first year that France had scored so high in the startup ecosystem," commented Julia Fenart, head of European public affairs for France Digitale, during the virtual conference. "Twice as much was invested in AI compared to 2018."

2019 closed with a record high, but 2020 is likely to close with a record low. Conducted in the second half of 2020, the study references 453 AI-related startups in France versus 435 in 2019. The increase is weak, but it should not affect the high dynamics in the development of AI technologies over the last few years.

"The new France Digitale mapping has 453 AI startups which shows that AI continues to penetrate all sectors of the economy, from robotics to business, to health, energy, agriculture, and transport," said Imogen London, policy analyst at France Digitale, at the conference.
