Sustainability and Digitalization: The Road to Tech-Positive

The growing demand for computing power has led to increased carbon emissions and e-waste, posing a dilemma for business leaders. On one hand, technology is a significant contributor to environmental issues, but on the other hand, it holds the key to sustainable solutions.

The history of humanity is at a turning point. Two powerful forces, sustainability and digitization, are coming together. Organizations are under increasing pressure to contribute to the mitigation of climate change as we move closer to 2030–the deadline for a major reduction in CO2 emissions set by the U.S. government as well as the U.N.'s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

The growing demand for computing power, driven by disruptive technologies like artificial intelligence, advanced automation, the internet of things and edge computing has led to increased carbon emissions and e-waste, posing a dilemma for business leaders. On one hand, technology is a significant contributor to environmental issues, but on the other hand, it holds the key to sustainable solutions.

To address this challenge, Intel's report proposes a new role for chief technology officers (CTOs) as "sustainable CTOs." These leaders must take a long-term, deep, technical, system-level architecture view to align business strategy, technology and sustainability. They need to reduce IT-related emissions and leverage technology to transform their organizations into "tech positive" entities, which not only focus on greener IT but embrace sustainable practices throughout the business model to drive growth in the new economy. For CTOs to become successful sustainable CTOs, they will need board-level support to help them close key gaps in terms of knowledge, innovation and investment.

"With this research, we are bringing together technology industry leaders to share understanding, insights and best practices to bridge knowledge gaps and help shape a roadmap to tech-positive," an Intel spokesperson said in an interview with Power Electronics News. "Intel is focused on more co-innovation, scaling pilots and sharing our best practices. There's no easy solution to solve the trilemma. However, through cross-industry collaboration, we'll be able to better develop holistic strategies to make meaningful progress."
